Abstract

1,191,635. Alkali metal or ammonium orthophosphates. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 21 July, 1967 [27 July, 1966], No. 33830/66. Heading C1A. Alkali metal or NH 4 orthophosphate is manufactured by mixing urea and wet process phosphoric acid (W.P.A.) to form crystals of urea phosphate, separating the crystals from the mother liquor and reacting them with an alkali metal or NH 4 hydroxide or salt of a volatile anion, e.g. OH-, CO 3 = , sulphite or sulphide, at a temp. below that at which the urea would hydrolyse, preferably below 70‹ C., in aqueous soln., the concns. of the reactants being such that the soln., after cooling, is saturated with respect to the desired orthophosphate or hydrate thereof. Thus, crystals of NaH 2 PO 4 .H 2 O, NaH 2 PO 4 .2H 2 O or Na 2 HPO 4 .7H 2 O may be obtained. In the case of NaH 2 PO 4 the reactants, their proportions and concns. may be such that the resultant soln. is saturated with urea as well as with mono-sodium phosphate and the urea floats and the phosphate sinks. The mother liquor containing NaH 2 PO 4 may be used to ppt. Na 2 SiF 6 from W.P.A.
