A scrap baling press includes an open charging trough above the press box in which scrap is given a preliminary compression by a plunger prior to discharge into the box. The press inincludes a main plunger 11 in the box 10, the box having a closeable lid 23, and an auxiliary plunger 14 which compresses and then discharges a scrap bale through an aperture 18, the latter being normally closed by a slide 19. The trough 25 has extensions 41, 42 to guide in scrap fed by a conveyer 45. A plunger 26 compresses the scrap against an upward extension 39 of the press box or against a wall 33 carried by the lid. The plungers 11, 14, 26, lid 23 and slide 19 are all operable independently by hydraulic cylinder and piston means. The plungers 11, 26 have rearward extensions 43, 40 to prevent scrap falling behind them. In operation a charge may be fed into the trough while the lid is open and compressed against the extension 39. The lid 23 is then lowered to press down the charge, cutting edges 29, 32 shearing any protruding portions. With the lid closed the plunger 11 and then the plunger 14 compress the charge further and the slide 19 is withdrawn to permit discharge of the bale by the plunger 14. During this period a further charge may have been compressed against the wall 33. The independent controls permit any of the above operations to be carried out in part and repeated if a charge is difficult initially to force into the press box.
