Abstract

1,111,909. Baling presses. LOGEMANN BROS. CO. 15 Dec., 1965 [6 Jan., 1965], No. 53328/65. Heading B5F. [Also in Division B3] A method of compressing scrap or like loose material includes the steps of placing a charge of the material between two working surfaces of a press and moving one of said surfaces towards the other in a direction oblique to said other surface, thereby to subject the said charge to a force which has a component perpendicular to said other surface and a component parallel to said other surface. A charge of scrap metal &c. 14, 24 is placed in a squeeze box 12 and a pivoted cover 30 is swung over by hydraulic cylinders 34 to close the box 12. A platen 20, forming one side of the box, is then moved obliquely towards a stationary platen, forming the other side of the box, by hydraulic cylinders 50 to crush and compress the scrap. The platen 20 is then retracted, the cover 30 lifted and an end ram 55 pushes the compressed charge endwise to a shear press 54 at the other end of the box 12. A ram 56 of the shear press 54 carries a cutting blade to cut the crushed charge into pieces of the desired length.
