Abstract

671,596. Consolidating scrap. LINDEMANN, W. April 12, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 9035/50. Class 83 (iv). In a press for consolidating metal scrap the charging opening to the pressure chamber 2, Fig. 3, is closed by the press ram 3 only when the ram approaches the end of its stroke. Scrap may be continuously fed on conveyers to the charging opening, a plate 6 on the ram 3 completely closing the opening as the ram reaches the end of its stroke and co-operating shearblades 4, 5 on the ram and lid severing the projecting scrap as the gap closes. The lid 7 covering part of the charging opening normally remains closed but may be opened by a ram 13 for passing bulky scrap. The length of the piston-rod 14 for the ram 13 is adjustable for setting the clearance between the blades 4, 5. The blade 5 is disposed below the pivot point of the lid 7 so that the shearing action tends to close the lid. Press plates 20 operated by transversely-disposed rams 12, Fig. 4, complete the consolidation of the scrap and these rams, the ram 3 and the lid ram 13 may be automatically controlled in co-operation with the feeding device for the scrap. In a modification the lid 7 may be replaced by a fixed wall.
