Abstract
669,708. Baling - presses. DEMPSTER BROS, Inc. Feb. 7, 1950. [April 25, 1949] No. 3160/50. Class 94(i). In a baling-press in which material, such as scrap metal, is charged in an opentopped compression box and compressed by rams after the top of the box has been closed by a door, an auxiliary compressing- member is provided which is movably mounted at one side of the box and is movable into the box to compact the material therein and clear the charging opening so that the door may close without difficulty. As shown in Fig. 1, the press is of the type comprising a press-box 11 in which the material is compressed by hydraulic rams 28, 33, arranged at rightangles, which operate in succession after the closure of a sliding door 13 which is locked by a wedge mechanism, the material being charged into the box by means of a pivoted hopper. The lower wall of the box is formed in part by the head of third ram 34 by which the completed bale may be elevated after opening of the door. In one form, Fig. 3, the auxiliary compressing- member comprises a box structure 47 secured to arms 45, which are pivoted on a shaft 44 at one side of the box, and to a cross-member 51 pivotally connected to the rod 58 of a piston working in a hydraulic cylinder 57 to which pressure liquid may be admitted to swing the member into or out of the box. In a second form, Fig. 5, the compressing-member 46 is carried by arms 63 pivoted at 64 and is operated through linkage by a hydraulic cylinder 75.
