Class 94(i) A baling press is characterised by the feature that it comprises a horizontally extending casing dosed at its two ends by movable walls and a movable partition dividing the interior of the casing into two chambers and acting as a pressing plate, said plate being connected at each side edge by means extending through a longitudinal slot in the side wall of the casing to the common rod of the pistons of two oppositely acting hydraulic jacks, and said jacks being actuated alternately to compress into bales material loaded into the chambers. A double acting baling press comprises a horizontal casing 1, having a wooden lining, and closable at each end by flaps 6, 6a, 6b, 6c hinged to the lower edge of the casing and held in a closed position by spring-urged catches 39 actuated by a cam 46 moved by a hand lever 47. A movable transverse partition 29, comprising a channel iron frame covered by iron sheets, acts as a pressing plate and is secured to a transverse member 34 carried at each of its ends by common rods 23, 231 of aligned hydraulic piston and cylinder means 20, 21 on either side of the casing 1, a pump 26 for the hydraulic fluid being mounted on top of the casing. Three U-shaped strips 15, 16, 17 are secured on each face of the pressing plate 29 with their arms 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> extending outwards from the face, the lower arm 15<SP>11</SP> being rather longer than the upper arm 15<SP>1</SP>. In operation, the flaps 6, 6a, 6b, 6c at one end of the casing are opened, the bale compressed thereagainst removed, and binding wires are laid along the strips 15, 16, 17, being held on the face of the plate 29 between the transverse parts of the U strips and other strips secured to the plate, their ends being tied through oblique holes 37 in the ends of the arms of the strips. Meanwhile material has been loaded into the other end of the casing and the flaps at that end closed so that as the plate 29 moves back it compresses this bale, and allows material to be loaded in at the first-mentioned end of the casing, the arms 15<SP>1</SP>. 1511 of the U strips pass between the flaps through the end of the casing so that the ends of the wire held by said arms may be untied therefrom and tied together to secure the wires around the bale. Each end of the casing may comprise a single hinged flap suitably perforated for the passage of the arms 15<SP>1</SP>, 15". The press may be mounted on wheels 49 or on a fixed stand.
