BALINGr-PRESS FOR HANK-YARN.
Application filed March 28, 1918.
To all w hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH B. SMITH, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and St-ate of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ealing-Presses for Hank-Yarn, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an improvement in baling presses. The object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive baling press for use in baling wool in hanks, and one which has various features of construction hereinafter referred to. which conduce to the efiiciency and rapidity with which it may be operated. To the above ends, the present invention consists in the baling press described in the following specification and particularly defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the baling press, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same with the standard removed.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention is described as follows:
The baling press is provided with a base 1 which supports a standard 2 which cornprises a hydraulic or pneumatic actuating cylinder. This cylinder 2 is flanged at its upper end at 3 and has secured to this flange a bed-plate 4. Mounted on each end of the bed-plate are hank-pins 5 which are received in the hank-pin brackets 6 which are secured by screws 7 to the ends of the bed-plate 4. Bosses 8 on the bracket 6 have holes which receive the hank-pins 5, being secured in the holes by means of the set screws 9. On the front and back of the bed-plate 4 are secured side guides 10 and 11, 10 being guides provided with locking devices and 11 being plain guides. Four rear guides 12 correspond to the four front guides 10, and each rear guide 12 is provided with a swinging cover 13 pivoted at 14 to the upper end of the rear guides 12. A rearward extension 15 of the top of the covers 13 is provided to support the covers 13 in open position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The front Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Serial No. 225,217.
guides 10 are each provided with a lock lever 16 which is pivoted at 17 to the side of the guide 10. This lock lever 16 has a little projection on its lower end which is adapted to engage the guide 10 and hold it in its open position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The upper end of the lever 16 is received in a slot in the front end of the cover 13. When the cover is closed and the-lever 16 is moved to the full line position shown in Fig. 2, the handle-collar 18 of the lever slips over a little prominence 19 on the end of the cover 13 so as to be held thereby from slipping ofl". The platen 20 of the press is a rectangular plate supported at its center by the plunger rod 21 which carries upon its lower end the piston 22 which is received in the cylinder 2. The plunger rod 21 is packed where it passes through the bed-plate 4 by means of a gland 23. A pressure pipe 24 connects with the lower end of the cylinder 2; a pressure pipe 25 connects with the upper end of the cylinder 2. These in turn are connected with the four-way valve 26 which is provided with a handle 27 by which it is operated so as to connect the supply pipe 25 with the exhaust pipe 29, or vice versa, t-o connect the supply pipe 28 with the top pipe 25 and the exhaust pipe 29 with the bottom pipe 24.
In baling hanks of yarn, one end of the hank is looped over a hank-pin 5 at one end of the press, then the hank is twisted more or less and the other end of the hank is looped over the opposite pin 5 at the other end of the press. Hanks are set up on the pins from the platen 20 to the top of the press, and they are forced down by hand pressure until as many hanks as are desired to be baled together are arranged in position; then the covers 13 are turned down over the hanks and the locking lever 16 thrown into position to hold the covers in place. Thereupon the four-way valve is operated to admit pressure to the bottom of the cylinder 2, which thereby forces the piston upward, causes the platen 20 to rise and to compress the hanks of yarn to the desired degree, when strings, previously placed on the platen, will be tied around the yarn. The pressure will be relieved by turning the four-way valve so as to connect the lower end of the cylinder with the exhaust, whereupon tbe press Will be opened by unlocking the covers, and the bale Will be lifted out. Compressed air, or Water, or oil under pressure, may be used to operate the press. The
press is readily loaded with banks of yarn, tbe closure of the cover is easily and quickly eli'ected, pressure promptly and effectively applied Without excessive labor on the part of theV operator, and tbe baling of the banks is completed by tying the compressed body of banks While under pressure.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed =is l. A fbaling press'for bank-yarn having, in combination, 'a bed-plate, a plural-ity of guides secured to tbe bed plate on its sides and ends, the end fguicles constituting supports: for the yarn banks and the side guides constituting side supports vto prevent -lateral displacement l'of the yarn, a cover 'and a platen, and means for actuating the platen to-p'ress the banks supported on tbeplaten 'and between the guides.
Q. A 'bali'ng press having, in combination, 'a platen, a vertical guide supported on one side ofthe platen provided With a locking llefer; "a guide supported on the other side 4of the platen provided with a cover secured 'thereto and adapted to belockedin closed position by the locking lever.
3. Apbaling press having, in combination, a bed plate, a platen, a series of bank pins at each end of the bed-plate adapted to receive a plurality of yarn hanks, a cover, and pressingmeans.
ll. A baling press for bank-yarn having, in combination, a base, a standard consisting of "a pressure cylinder, 'a `bed-plate mounted on' the upper end of the cylinder, a guide secured to the bed-plate, a piston in tbe cylinder', a xplatenabove tbe bed-plate, a plunger rod connecting-the piston With tbe platen, :gi-iides for the yarn, and afcover and locking means therefor.
5. A baling press lfor bankeyarn having, in combination, abed-plate, a plurality of fgufides securedto tbe Abed-plate at its sides and ends, the vend guides constituting supports for 'the yarn banks, andthe side guides 7constitutingside s11p};ror`tsl to prevent lateral displacement lory tbe yarn, alternate members `of the 'side ffguides lbeing provided with covers and locking-means, a platen and actuating means therefor.
