SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,157, dated October 13, 1891.

Application filed March 13, 1891.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED H. BRICKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Damascus, in the county of Van Buren and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to presses, and particularly to cotton presses which employ steam-cylinders, the pistons of which coinpress the material in the baling-chamber.

The object of the invention is to provide a cotton or other press with two steam-cylinders, the pistons of which operate a follower, which compresses the material.

A further object is to provide a cotton or or a series of them, to receive a proper charge of the material to be compressed, and also to provide a compressing-chamber constructed with hinged sides and ends automatically locked together, so that either one end or side may be thrown open, or the entire chamber thrown open.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and set out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an end view of my improved press with the sliding receptacle under the baling or compressing chamber and showingiu dotted lines such receptacle in position to receive the material to be compressed. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof,showing the downwardly-projectingflanges of the follower. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the compressing or baling chamber, having its hinged ends and sides closed. Fig. at is a similar view thereof, showing the sides and ends open. Fig. 5 is a detached sectional View of the receptacle, taken on the line a; m, Fig. 2, showing the hangers supporting the follower.

lower 0, having downward-projecting flanges c. The tops of the cylinders are secured to cross-bars O, fixed to the standards D, which extend from the base A throughout the entire length of the press. Above these cross-bars C are secured, also on the standards D, suit able beams E, having flanges 6, upon which the baling-box F is supported, so as to be readily moved back and forth thereon. The flanges e are constructed so as to extend out on either side any desired distance,buttheyare shown in the present instance extending out only on one side, so as to allow the receptacle or box F to extend out on one side a sufficient distance to receive the cotton or whatevermaterial is to be compressed.

The box F is provided with flanges f, which project at right angles to the end of the box F, so as to allow the flanges f to fit closely over the flanges e whereon the receptacle or box is moved back and forth.

Near the outer ends of the beamsE abracerod G reaches from one to the other, so as to firmly hold them together, and 011 this rod G, close up to the flanges e, is pivoted a pair of operating-levers H, having a suitable hand-1e g at their outer ends, and pivotally connected to a pair of arms or links I, pivoted at h to the receptacle F. Lowering the. handle g, as shown in the dotted lines, Fig. 1, causes the receptacle to slide out from the machine, and by pulling said handle back to a horizontal position the said receptacle is brought back under the baling-chamber again.

The compressing-chamber O is constructed of independent sides M, hinged or pivoted to the standards D, the front side being provided with a spring latch M The rear side is hinged on a standard D, diagonally opposite the standard on which the front side is hinged, and the free end of such rear side is provided with a pivoted lock or clamp M, so that when the chamber 0 is closed, the said clamp N, which has a right-angled portion n, will clinch and hold the hinged end of the front side M securely locked, which also locks the ends 0. The sides M are provided with right-angled plates or stops m, secured thereon near the hinged or pivoted portion thereof. The ends 0 are constructed of wedge-shaped pivoted arms 0, having notches O in their large ends and also apertures 0' in the said large end whereby they are pivoted to the standards. The arms are connected by suitable boards, and the free ends are kept in proper position when closed,by the stop-plates m on the sides M. One of the ends 0 and one of the sides M, or both, or each, are provided with a rackbar P on their insides, so as to keep the cotton or other material being pressed suspended therein without danger of its becoming loose and falling out while the follower is on its descent.

Q, denotes a pair of iron hangers secured to the receptacle or box F, which extend across the bottom of the said box, so as to support the follower loosely in position'over the crosshead.

I am aware that a steam-cylinder having a piston-rod adapted to' operate a follower has been used, as well as one cylinder with two piston-rods. I therefore do not lay claim to 20 any such machines; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A baling-chamber for cotton-presses, constructed With hinged sides and ends, each side 25 being provided with stop-plates m, one of such sides having a pivoted locking-clamp N, and the side M having a latch M whereby the sides and ends are locked together, subs't-antially as shown and described.
