To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AXELL E. BLoor'rBUne, of Hackett City, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which. will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. I

This-invention relates to baling-presses; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the saine, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame of my improved balingpress. Said press consists essentially of two chambers orcompartmcnts-via, the packing chamber B and the press-box O, which forms an extension of said packing-chamber. The top or cover D of the press-box is hinged to one of the sides, E, which is in turn hinged to the bottom F, so that the said top and side may be folded down and outof the way. The other side, G, is hinged detaohably to the bottom, so that it may be removed when the bale is to be taken out of the press. The sides of the packing-chamber are secured permanently to the bottom F of the press, and covers H H, one of which is adapted to fold over the other, are hinged to said sides. Said covers, when open, form the sides of a hopper, the ends of which are formed by frame-partitions I I, arranged over the press-box, as shown. This hopperenables the material to be pressed to be conveniently placed in the box. When the covers are closed the upper one is secured by a hook and a staple, J K.
To secure the press-box in a closed position 1 avail myself of the clamp L, fitting over the top and sides of said box, and'having shoulders M, which, when the said clamp is in position, bear against the frame-beams N. The clamp L is provided with a handle, 0, serving as a lever for manipulating said clamp.
The rear end of the press-box has an extension, P, the top of which has a longitudinal slot,- Q, under which is arranged a transverse shaft, R. Pivoted upon said shaft is a lever, S, having two pivoted pawls or dogs, T U, arranged respectively above and below the fulcrum, and engaging a rack on ratchet-bar V, formed or secured upon the stem W of the follower X, which slides longitudinally in the press-box. Said follower is provided on its under side with rollers or casters Y, and casters Z are likewise journaled on cross-pieces A in the extension of the press-box to support the follower-stem. The pawls T U are connected by rods B with bell-crank levers or handles 0, pivoted near the upper end of lever S, the rod B from the lower pawl, U, passing through a slot, D, in pawl T. By means of these bell-crank levers and connecting-rods either or both of the pawls may be lifted out of en gagement with the rack-bar of the follower.
F F are removable press-blocks, which fit in the press-box, and are provided upon their inner sides with grooves G,'and upon their outer sides with recesses H to receive the hooked ends I of the connecting T rods or clamps J, which are shown in detail in Fig. 5'of the drawings.
K is a platform hinged to the side of the frame and supported by chains L, which connect its outer corners with those of the frame. This platform, when not in use, may be folded upbeside the press-box and held by a hook and staple, so as to be out'of the way.
My improved hay-press may be mountedupon any ordinary wagon'or truck, so as to be easily transported from place to place.
Theoperation is as follows One of the pressblocks is placed at the inner end of the pressbox, which is closed, and the otherat the end of the follower, which is withdrawn from the press-box and packing-chamber. The covers of the latter are thrown open, and the hay or other material to be pressed placed therein and inthe press-box, into which it may readily be pushed by means of a pitchfork. The covers of the packing-chamber are then closed and the bale formed or compressed by operatinglever S, the pawls of which will alternately engage the rack upon the follower-stem, thus forcing the follower gradually into the pressbox. The latter is now thrown open and the press-blocks F F connected by the clamps J, which will thus hold or confine the bale and prevent it from expanding while the follower is released, which is done by alternately disengaging the pawls T U from the ratchet-bar while the lever S is being operated, thus moving the follower back gradually from contact with the bale. The latter may now be pushed out upon the platform K and tied, and the follower withdrawn for a repetition of the operation by lifting or releasing the pawls T U from the ratchet-bar upon the follower-stem.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. In a baling-press, the combination, with the frame A,having beams N,of the press-box, the pressing-chamber G of which is provided with the detachably-hinged side G and hinged side and top E D, and the clamp L, having shoulders M and handle 0, as set forth.
2. In a baling-press, the packing-chamber having hinged covers adapted to fold oneover the other, as set forth.
3. In a baling-press, the packing-chamber having hinged covers H H, in combination with the frame-partitions I I, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The lever S, having pawls T U, pivoted above and below its fulcrum, the upper one, T, being provided with aslot, D, in combination with the connecting-rods B and bell-crank levers O, pivoted to the upper end of lever S, as set forth.
5. In a baling-press, the press-box having extension P and cross-pieces A, provided with rollers Z, in combination with the follower X, having rollers Y and stem W, as set forth.
6. The pressblocks F, having grooves G and recesses H, in combination with the rods or clamps J, having hooks I, as set forth.
7. The combination, in abaling-press, of the press-box having a detachable side, I with the hinged platform K, as set forth.
8. The combination of the packing-chamber having hinged covers with the press-box D, follower X, having ratchet-stem W, lever S, having pawls T U and mechanism for releasing said pawls, the press-blocks F, clamps J, and hinged platform K, all constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
