Abstract

793,676. Shaft couplings. FREE LOCK CORPORATION. June 27,1956, No. 19923/56. Class 80 (2). Means for connecting a wheel hub freely mounted for rotation about a drive-shaft to a splined tubular member secured to the shaft, comprises a tubular housing attached to the hub and carrying one or more radially movable clutch pawls which can be moved into engagement with the splines by a cam member rotatable externally to the tubular housing. A driveshaft 15 for a front wheel drive unit of a vehicle is within an axle casing 17 carrying a freely rotatable wheel hub 16 thereon. A housing member 22 and a tubular housing member 25 are secured to the hub 16 by bolts 26, both these housing members having radial notches 33, 35 in which are located flat portions 34 of a series of radially movable pawls 39 having teeth engageable with splines on a tubular member 21 rigid with the end of the shaft 15. A circular hub 29, rotatable by a spanner, is formed with cam members 38 which co-operate with slots in the flat portions 34 to advance the pawls into locked engagement with the splines, or to hold the pawls out of engagement. In a second embodiment, Fig. 10, the pawls 48 are moved inwards by cam surfaces 52 which have concentric portions 52A to retain the pawls in the engaged position. The pawls are moved radially outwards by pins 50 co-operating with curved slots in the cam member 51. To assist the easy engagement of the pawl teeth the slots in the member holding the pawls may have tapered sides as at 58.
