Abstract

754,308. Preventing the unauthorized use of vehicles. KNOETZE, H. F. Oct. 12, 1954, No. 29399/54. Class 79 (3). An anti-theft device enabling the steering of a vehicle to be rendered inoperative comprises an internally-toothed ring 27 fixed in a cavity 19 in a steering wheel hub 12, a coaxiallydisposed head 25 within the toothed ring 27 fixed to a steering column shaft 24 and rotatable relative to the hub 12, a plurality of radial locking bolts 30 mounted in guideways 29 on the head 25 and slidable radially with their outer ends 31 adapted to engage with the toothed ring 27 to lock the steering column shaft 24 to the steering wheel hub 12, and a key-operated rotary member 36 mounted coaxially and rotatably on the head 25 and having pin and cam-slot connections with the inner ends of the bolts 30 such that rotation of the member 30 in one direction or the other causes the bolts 30 to slide into or out of engagement with the toothed ring 27. The head 25 has the form of a circular flanged plate lying in a recess 20 in the floor of the cavity 19 and carries a cylinder lock 33 by means of arms 32 which straddle the rotary member 36 keyed to the rotatable plug of the cylinder lock. The ends of the bolts are bifurcated and carry pins 38 engaging with the spiralling cam slots 39 in the rotary member 36. With the bolts 30 withdrawn from the toothed ring 27 the steering wheel is useless.
