A permutation lock for connecting the apertured outer ends of a pair of fixed arms 14 projecting through the spokes &c. of a spare wheel on a motor vehicle comprises a bolt 36, Fig. 7, fitted with a number of lugs 40 adapted to co-operate with grooved rings 42 working inside lettered or numbered rings 51. The bolt is unlocked by turning the rings 42 by means of the rings 51 until the grooves 49 are colinear with the lugs 40. When this is the case the bolt can be moved lengthwise until the narrow part 37 lies beneath a slot 39 in one of the arms. The bolt can then be lifted out. In another form of lock, Fig. 12, a bolt 63 prevents the two spring- pressed halves 56 of the bolt from being approached the one to the other until it is withdrawn by a key. In another form, Fig. 14. the two halves 67 are normally pressed inwards by springs and are kept in the locking position shown by pins 71 on bolts moved apart by a key. In a modification of this last form the ends of the bolt casing envelop the arms 14 which are made circular in section.
