Abstract

792,682. Combustion apparatus. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING, Inc. Sept. 15, 1955 [Nov. 19, 1954], No. 26425/55. Class 51 (1). In the boiler shown which is fired by the fluidized bed technique, the bed is at least partly catalytic and the fuel and air supply is regulated such that complete fuel oxidation is effected in the zone A. The bed 11 comprises particles of a catalyst such as alumina, zirconia, thoria &c. in activated form and impregnated with a small amount of metal such as platinum, palladium, silver, copper, chromium, cobalt, nickel. The bed may also contain some inert material. The fuel to be burnt, which may be oil, gas or coal, is injected with primary air via pipe 12 and nozzles 14 whilst secondary air is introduced through the windbox 16 below the bed and its perforated plate support. The bed top is indicated at t and within the bed are located tubes 20 through which water is pumped via header 23 and from which hot water, saturated steam or superheated steam is led off through header 25.
