Abstract

790,775. Windscreen cleaners. PRODUCTIVE INVENTIONS, Inc. Dec. 16, 1954 [April 21, 1954], No. 36446/54. Class 138(1). A windshield wiper arm 1, Fig. 2, connectible to a drive shaft 5 and carrying a wiper blade assembly 2, is provided with a member 17 movable relative to the arm 1 to forcibly tilt the assembly 2 relative to the arm 1 about the longitudinal axis of the blade or about an axis parallel to that axis, during a predetermined portion of the travel of the blade. The drive shaft 5 is carried in a mounting 6, and the wiper arm 1, has an inner section 4 secured to the shaft and an outer channel section 7 pivoted at 8 to the section 4. A wiper arm pressure distributing structure, formed of a primary yoke 12 and secondary yokes 11, is connected to the wiper blade formed of a wiper element 9 and backing support 10. The primary yoke 12, Fig. 7, has secured thereto a channel connector 13, the sides 14 of which are apertured at 15 to receive projections 23 of the member 17 pivoted by a rivet 18 to a member 16 secured to the arm section 7. The rivet is disposed in downturned offsets 19, 21 of the members 16, 17, whilst portions 20, 22 thereof are provided with cam slots having normally aligned portions 24, 26, Fig. 6, and crossed portions 25, 27, respectively. Disposed in the slots is a cam follower 29 the head 28 of which abuts the lower surface of the member 17 whilst the shank is connected to one end of a spring rod 30, the other end of which is pivotally connected to a plate member 31, Fig. 2, adjustably secured to the mounting 6. With the cam follower in the position shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the member 17 is prevented from rotation since the follower is engaged in the slot portions 24, 26 so that the wiper blade will be positioned relative to the arm 7 as depicted in full lines in Figs. 4 and 5. As the arm oscillates to the position 34, Fig. 5, the follower will move out of the slot portions 24, 26 and enter the slot portions 25 of the member 16. Since, the follower then also engages in the slot portion 27 of the member 17 the latter pivots relative to the member 16 as the arm moves to the position 35 on the "wrapped-round" wing portion 33 of the windshield, and the angle between the longitudinal axis of the blade and arm is increased. Owing to the pivotting of the offset 21 relative to the offset 19 the blade 9, 10 and its superstructure is also tilted relative to the offset 19. The blade is thus maintained substantially normal to the windshield as shown at 38, Fig. 4. The members 16, 17, follower 29 and rivet 18, are enclosed in a shroud 32, Fig. 7.
