Class 138(1) In a windshield wiper a main supporting yoke 47, Fig. 4, for a wiper blade 44 is pivotally connected at spaced points (48, 49) to the respective outer ends of a primary arm 29, mounted upon and driven by a rotatable pivot shaft 23, and a secondary arm 37 adapted to be moved lengthwise relatively to the arm 29 by angular movement of the arms in a plane containing the axis of the shaft 23. As shown in Fig. 3, the inner ends of the channel-section arms 29, 37 are pivoted, respectively at 32, 38, on a head 27, secured at 26 to the shaft 23, the arm 37 telescoping into the arm 29. The pivots 32, 38 are at right-angles to the shaft 23 and the arm 29 is spring-urged towards the curved windshield surface. At their outer ends the arms 29, 37, Fig. 4, have offset integral flanges 41 and 43 pivotally connected to pins 48, 49, parallel to the shaft 23 and carried by the yoke 47 which supports two secondary yokes 46, connected to the blade 44. When oscillated across the windshield the arms are also moved towards or away from the windshield about the pivots 32, 38, this movement causing the outer end of the arm 37 to move lengthwise relatively to and within the arm 29 to move the pivot pin 49 angularly with respect to the pin 48 and thereby alter the inclination of the . blade 44 with respect to the arms 29, 37. The blade is thus retained in a generally vertical position on the side portions of the windshield which are of the greatest curvature and bending or flexing of the blade in these areas is reduced. Moreover the lower extremity ' of the blade is advanced closer to the side edge of the windshield to increase the area wiped.
