Abstract

789,379. Partition walls. ARCON (PROPRIETARY), Ltd. Oct. 31, 1955 [Oct. 29, 1954], No. 31358/54. Class 20(4) An interior dividing wall comprises a cornice member 14 and a skirting member 15 secured to a ceiling C and a floor F respectively and a series of panels 1 grooved along top and bottom edges at 19 and 17 to be engaged by the cornice and skirting members to secure the panels in edge to edge relationship, the top groove 19 being deeper than the bottom groove 17 and sufficiently wide as to permit each panel to be inserted by offering the panel to the cornice member at an angle, swing- ing the panel inwardly and upwardly and then allowing the bottom groove to drop into engagement with the skirting member, the top groove 19 having a tongue 20 projecting into a groove 21 in the cornice member 14 which has one side inclined to allow insertion but holds the tongue tightly on assembly. As shown in Fig..3, the skirting member 15 has a tongue 16 to fit the groove 17 and the central tongue 20 co-operates with the groove 21 which is dovetailed, the tongue 20 sliding along the inclined surface 22 or 23 during insertion, but engaging across the narrowest part of the dovetail groove to prevent play. Flat or beaded edge rubber strips 24 may be glued to the cornice member 14 to reduce sound penetration. As shown in Fig. 4, the panels 1 may have along their vertical edges alternate grooves 6 and tongues 7 by which the panels are locked together the outermost panel of each partition having a relatively deep groove 9 for engagement by trim members. Trim members may give a direct join to an outer wall, or be L-shaped as at 1D, Fig. 4, to join partitions at right angles, cruciform to join four partitions or of T-section as at 12, Fig. 6, to join three partitions, when a cover strip 13. to match the panels 1, may be added to fill in the recess between the two partitions. Instead of tongues 7 and grooves 6, loose tongues may be used to connect panels grooved along both vertical edges. The panels may be relatively narrow to provide a decorative effect.
