Abstract
511,074. Partitions. HARRIS & SHELDON, Ltd., SANKEY & SONS, Ltd., J., and BUTLER, H. G. March 10, 1938, No. 7455. [Class 20 (iv)] A metal pillar for use in the construction of partitions comprises a pair of vertical channels 1 secured together, with the hollows of the channels towards one another, by coupling- plates 7 which are connected to the sides of the channels by attachment means comprising hooks or projections 10 on the one cart engaging holes 11 in the other part, the coupling-plates having, intermediate the attachment means, spacing ribs or parts 8 which fit between, and separate, the two vertical channels. Each of the channels 1 is formed with a central groove 2, which receives a panel 5, and inturned side flanges 4. Each coupling-plate 7 is of channel cross-section having narrow side flanges 9 extending therefrom and terminating in a beading 12 having an inwardly-projecting flange 13. The channel portion 8 of each plate 7 fits between the flanges 4 of the channels 7 so that the flanges 9 seat against the side flanges 3 of the channels and the flanges 13 engage the outer faces of the bases of the channels; hooks 10 or studs provided on the flanges 9 are adapted to engage apertures 11 in the flanges 3. The plates 7 are arranged opposite each other in pairs, and each pair of such plates is arranged to support an H- shaped plate 14 which is forced down between the opposed channels 1 so as to press the latter against the flanges 13 of the plates 7; the branches 14a of the plate 14 fit around the grooved portions 2 of the channels 1. A cover plate 15 which is fitted on each side of the pillar member is of shallow channel cross-section with inturned lips 16; the plate 15 is adapted to be sprung over the beadings 12 of the plates 7. The cover plates 15 on opposite sides of the partition provide between them rebated portions for the reception of either panels 6 on opposite sides of the panel 5, or the ends of horizontal cross-bars or transoms. The bottom of the pillar member may be prevented from movement by the upstanding flanges 17a of an H- shaped base plate 17 which is secured to the floor. The top of the pillar member may be engaged by a member somewhat similar to the base-plate 17, but used in inverted position; this member is secured to a cornice in the channels 1 and into the spaces between the flanges of the member. Where three sides of the pillar are to support partition panels, one of the cover plates 15 is formed with a central groove to receive the edges of adjacent panels 5, and this cover plate may also be rebated to receive panels 6 on each side of the panel. The other cover plate may be similarly formed where four partitions meet at right angles. Specification 486,052 is referred to.
