Portable flooring comprises slabs 1 incorporating means for joining them to adjacent, identical slabs, and to edge strips, which taper outwardly in cross-section, and form a surround to the flooring. Each slab comprises a body portion 7, of e.g., fibre board, with tenoned edges 14 to which are nailed or stapled extruded aluminium male and female strip coupling members 9 and 10, two adjacent edges having male coupling members 9, the other two having female coupling members 10. On assembly, male and female coupling members of adjacent slabs may be joined together by headless screws 19, which pass through threaded holes 20 in the female coupling members, and also through holes 23 in the surface layers 8, which are made, e.g., of hardboard, and glued to the body portions 7. Alternatively, the male and female coupling members may have co-operating lower flanges 32 and 35 (Fig. 8, not shown) which are held in engagement by a pivotable plate 36 operated via a vertical shaft 37 with a slotted head. The edge strips, which are made, e.g., of oak, are formed with similar coupling members (Fig. 2, not shown) and are similarly connected to the slabs.
