Abstract
788,902. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 9, 1955 [Nov. 13, 1954], No. 32942/54. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor comprising a graphite core, a gas seal between the reflector structure 11 and a pressure vessel 10 containing the reactor consists of a flange 16 supporting flexible webs 21 extending radially into slots 15 within the structure. The webs 21 are thickened at the inner edge by steel members 23, or by curvature of the webs, Fig. 4. In a further form, Fig. 5, the web is fabricated with a fold to allow for greater expansion. The graphite structure rests on roller bearings 12 on a base plate 13 on a grid 14 supported by the dished end of vessel 10. Preferably two rings of webs are used, as shown. The graphite core has spaces allowing for Wigner growth and the reflector has spaces to equalize gas pressure and avoid explosive forces from arising within the core.
