Abstract
788,046. Control of A.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 11, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 17971/56. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] A single-phase induction motor has a squirrelcage rotor, an auxiliary field winding 5, and a main winding with two sections 6, 7. Conductors extend from the motor windings to external terminals 20 . . . 23, a capacitor 24 being connected in series with the auxiliary winding 5. A temperature-responsive safety switch 14 is connectible in series between the winding 7 and the parallel-connected windings 5, 6. When switch arm 29 engages terminal 22, current flows through the elements 5, 6, and 14, so that both of the motor windings in use are thermally protected. If a lower speed is desired, the switch arm 29 is moved into engagement with terminal 23 whereby the winding 7 is introduced in series with the windings 5, 6. As before, the thermal switch affords protection for all the motor windings connected to the source of power. If operation at additional speeds are desired, additional sections may be added in the same manner as main winding section 7. The auxiliary winding and the capacitor may be disconnected when the motor reaches full speed.
