Abstract

764,758. Control of A.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 24, 1955 [March 24, 1954], No. 8618/55. Class 38(3) A multi-speed squirrel cage motor having a starting winding 4 as well as highspeed and low-speed running windings 5, 6, is protected against overload when operating at either speed by means of thermally-operated units 34, 39, which are associated with the windings 5, 6, respectively. For high-speed operation, switch arm 20 is engaged with terminal 22 so that the starting winding is energized through centrifugally-operated switch arm 16 and capacitor 29, and the winding 5 is connected in parallel with the winding 4. The motor circuit is completed through the heater coil 35 and bimetallic element 36 of the unit 34, and the bimetallic element 38 of the unit 39, the heater coil 45 of the second unit being omitted from the circuit. The protection of the motor thus depends principally upon the coil 35 which is chosen in view of the properties of the winding 5 with which it is associated. At a predetermined speed, the contact arm 16 moves to disconnect the starting winding 4. The switch arm 20 is moved to engage the terminal 23 for low-speed operation; and, as before, the windings 4 and 5 are energized. When the motor reaches fullspeed, however, the contact arm 16 engages contact 43 to de-energize the windings 4, 5, and to energize winding 6 through heater coil 45 and bimetallic element 38. In a modified arrangement, a single protective unit is provided with only-one bimetallic element and two heating coils connected respectively in series with the motor windings 5 and 6 (Fig. 2, not shown).
