A suprasynchronous polyphase motor has a stator 10 which produces a spirally travelling field of one hand and a rotor having spiral conductors 28 of the opposite hand but interconnected by spiral shorting conductors 30 of the same hand as the spirally travelling flux so as to permit the induction of appropriate currents in the rotor to produce a torque. The stator consists of spirally stacked laminations having three winding teeth and a slit at the top for reducing eddy-current losses. Winding layouts are given. The rotor has end-rings 31. A disc-type machine is described.
