In an inductor type step-by-step motor in which the stator has toothed poles and the rotor is continuously toothed, the slots between the stator poles are wound with polyphase control windings (two-phase as described) and with a D.C. excitation winding. The excitation windings are in wider slots than the control windings. The control windings are switched to produce rotation.
