Abstract
High-speed steels suitable for drills, milling cutters and reamers have compositions within the following range:- .C.1.0-1.5 per cent .Mn.up to 1.0 per cent .Si.up to 0.7 per cent .Cr.3.0-7.0 per cent .W.10.0-23.0 per cent .Mo.0-9.0 per cent .V.2.0-5.0 per cent .Al.0.1-1.5 per cent .Fe.and impurities the balance The alloy may also contain B 0.001-0.05 per cent and N up to 0.15 per cent. Certain of the steels within this range may be oil quenched from about 1220 DEG C and given a double temper within the range 530-590 DEG C. Alternatively one of the tempering treatments may be replaced by a freezing treatment in the range 0 to -70 DEG C. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys in which some of the constituents are present within wider ranges, namely C 0.6-1.5 per cent, W 4-23 per cent, V 1.0-5.0 per cent.
