Abstract

787,656. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Feb. 7, 1956 [Feb. 9, 1955], No. 3883/55. Class 4. In a levered-suspension nose or tail wheel undercarriage for aircraft wherein an outer casing 5 mounted for retraction about a pivot 39 carries a rotatable element 15 supporting the landing wheel, the piston rod 28 of shock absorber 27 has a universal mounting 29 with a cylindrical member 32 which is mounted for axial movement within a cylindrical extension 17 of element 15. The member 32 has a pivotal connection 34 with a link 35 which is connected at 36 to a bell-crank 38 mounted bn pivot 39 and secured rigidly at 43 to the aircraft structure. The member 32 has opposed cam faces 46 which merge into a parallel-sided slot 47 for co-operation with a roller 48 pivotally mounted on extension 17. With the undercarriage lowered as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, pivots 39, 36, link 35 and pivots 34 and 29 are aligned, thereby resisting upward movement of piston rod 28. During retraction this linkage is " broken and due to the offset between pivots 36 and 39 member 32 will be drawn upwardly within extension 17 to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby shortening the undercarriage. During such shortening movement roller 48 will be brought into contact with one or the other of cam faces 46 until it lies within slot 47, thereby ensuring that the wheel is correctly centred before final retraction.
