Abstract

<PICT:0787559/IV (a)/1> In wet-spinning wherein the filaments are drawn up and out of a narrow tube containing liquid, the liquid is stripped from the filaments as they emerge from the tube by a conical wire spiral coaxial with the tube, the diameter of the base of the cone being equal to or greater than the external diameter of the tube. The diameter of the hole at the apex of the conical wire spiral is preferably 0.05-0.15 inch and the spacing between adjacent turns is also 0.05-0.15 inch whereby liquid runs mainly down the outside of the spiral. Fig. 2 shows the top of the tube 7 from which the filaments are drawn through the conical wire spiral 10. The invention is of particular value in the manufacture of cellulose acetate by extruding an acetone solution of cellulose acetate into an aqueous solution of diethylene glycol diacetate or of acetone, but it may be used in other wet-spinning processes, e.g. in the spinning of acetic acid solutions of cellulose acetate into aqueous acetic acid containing a high concentration of a salt such as an alkali metal acetate. Specifications 695,559, 720,187, 787,556, 787,557, 787,558, 787,560, 787,561 and 787,562 are referred to.
