Abstract

<PICT:0787556/IV (a)/1> In the wet-spinning of artificial filaments wherein the filaments are spun upwardly into a narrow tube through which coagulating liquid flows, adherent liquid is wiped from the filaments shortly after they leave the tube and the liquid so removed is directed clear of the upper end of the tube. This is preferably done by passing the filaments through an inverted funnel, the wiped liquid dripping from the base of the funnel clear of the tube. As shown, the spinning jet 2 is located in a coagulating bath 1 supplied with coagulating liquid through pipe 4 and gauze 6, which prevents turbulence. Coagulating liquid passes up the setting tube 7, which may be of uniform section or its diameter may decrease in one or more stages. The filaments are drawn up the setting tube and stretched by godet 13, which is preferably fluted, and pass round skew-rollers 19 which dip into a washing bath. Excess liquid is removed from the filaments by a pigtail guide 12 and is guided by inverted funnel 10 into a collector head 8, clear of the open end of tube 7. The funnel stem 11 may have a hole small enough to wipe off some of the adherent liquid, but the filaments preferably pass through the funnel stem with a small clearance. The invention is of particular use in the extrusion of acetone solutions of cellulose acetate into aqueous solutions of diethylene glycol diacetate or of acetone, but may also be used in other wet-spinning processes, e.g. in the wet-spinning of acetic acid solutions of cellulose acetate, using as coagulant aqueous acetic acid containing a high concentration of a salt such as an alkali metal acetate. Specifications 695,559, 720,187, 787,557 and 787,558 are referred to.
