Abstract

<PICT:0787562/IV (a)/1> An apparatus for use in the manufacture of artificial filaments by wet-spinning comprises a closed vertical outer tube, a coaxial narrower inner tube opening into the outer tube at a level substantially above the lower end of the outer tube and extending upwards beyond the upper end thereof, an upwardly facing spinning jet in the outer tube below and coaxial with the inner tube, means for feeding a spinning solution to the spinning jet, means for introducing coagulant into the upper end of the outer tube, and means for collecting coagulant from the upper end of the jinner tube. As shown, the outer tube 1 is filled with coagulant, with air-vent 4 open, by means of the inlet 3 until the inner tube 5 is filled to the level 2. The vent 4 is then closed, the coagulant solution is fed in, preferably so that the rate of flow in tube 1 is less than 1 metre/minute, and the spinning solution is injected from the jet 11. The filaments so produced are carried up the inner tube 5 by the coagulant and issue from the orifice 6, whence they pass to a godet (not shown) and are stretched. The excess coagulant collects in the gutter 7 and is run off for recovery through duct 8. Vertical fins 15 keep the inner tube accurately centred and, together with the gauze 16 and the concave reflector 12, help to prevent turbulent flow of the coagulant solution. The diameter of the outer tube 1 should be at least twice, and preferably 2.5-3.0 times the diameter of the inner tube 5. The apparatus may be used for spinning acetone solutions of cellulose acetate, using diethylene glycol diacetate or aqueous acetone as coagulant, acetic acid solutions of cellulose acetate using aqueous acetic acid containing alkali metal acetates or other salts as coagulant, other cellulose esters and ethers, viscose, polyvinyl alcohol, copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile, and copolymers of acrylonitrile with other vinyl or vinylidene compounds. Specifications 720,187, 787,556, 787,557, 787,558, 787,559, 787,560, 787,561, and 787,563 are referred to.
