Abstract
<PICT:0789691/IV (a)/1> Obnoxious gases, e.g. hydrogen sulphide, produced in the manufacture of regenerated cellulose filaments and like products by the viscose process, are collected by passing the freshly formed products upwards through a stationary vertical tube with a concurrent stream of coagulating liquid, the tube having at the discharge end a stationary, partially enclosed chamber provided with an outlet for the liquid from the chamber directed downwards and so shaped as to cause the liquid leaving the chamber to draw gases from the chamber and entrain them with the liquid. The term "partially enclosed" means that the chamber has one or more relatively small openings to the atmosphere, insufficient to allow escape of the gases but sufficient to allow air to be drawn into the chamber by the entraining action of the liquid. Fig. 1 shows a section through a suitable spinning chamber. The freshly formed filaments 16 pass up the spinning tube 1 in a concurrent stream of coagulating liquid, through a slot 7 in disc 4 and through the thread guide 6 in cover 5 to further treatment positions or a collective point. The coagulating liquid welling up into chamber 9 flows by gravity through outlet 10, extension pipe 13, funnel 12, exit 14 and pipe 15, maintaining a liquid level in the chamber shown by the dotted line. As it passes from pipe 12 to exit 14 a suction is created; gases are drawn from the space above the coagulating liquid in chamber 9 through outlet 11 and are entrained in the liquid, which passes through pipe 15 to a quiescent zone where separation takes place. These gases comprise air drawn through the thread guide 6 and slot 7 in disc 4 and also gases, e.g. hydrogen sulphide, formed by interaction of the viscose and the coagulating liquid, which are carried up tube 1 either in solution or suspension in the coagulating liquid and given off in chamber 9. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the enclosing disc 4, showing slot 7 and a hole 8 used to position the disc by fitting over a peg (not shown) a member 2. Specifications 504,132, [Group IV], and 782,585 are referred to.
