Abstract

<PICT:0774814/IV(a)/1> In the melt-spinning of filaments and the like, the extruded material immediately on issuing from the spinning nozzle is caused to solidify in a quiescent air column in a hollow shaft whose walls are perforated so that the interior of the shaft is in direct communication with the ambient atmosphere. The upper portion of the shaft is preferably made of wire gauze, and the inside is preferably divided into a number of air chambers, to minimize air currents. As shown, 1 is a spinning nozzle, 2 the perforated portion of the shaft and 3 an imperforate portion. The interior of the shaft is divided transversely into a number of air chambers 7 and 4. A funnel 5 may be located adjacent the outlet 6 of the shaft, to deflect any ascending warm air currents. It is stated that filaments cooled by this method are of more uniform cross-section.
