Class 68(1) The bucket chain 13, 14 of a trench excavator hangs as a loop from an upper driven sprocket 30 mounted in a frame 10 that is slidably supported on a frame 4 by chains 11 passing over pulleys 12 on the frame 4 to a winch 16 freely mounted in a rotational but not in a longitudinal sense on a mobile-chassis supported shaft 7 on which the frame 4 is also pivotally supported so that it may be moved from a vertical to a substantially horizontal position. The bucket chain is driven from an engine on a mobile chassis 1 through a gear box 17, a two speed gear train of a gear box 19, shaft 22, gearing and chain gearing 24-30. The sprockets 26, 28 are fixed on articulated arms, the joint of said arms being free to move in space as the positions of the frames 4 and 10 are varied.
