Abstract

A nitrogenous fertilizer is produced by treating animal hair or wool at atmospheric pressure and at temperature below 100 DEG C. with caustic soda or caustic potash until a thick liquid mass is formed and until agglomeration or hardening of the mass takes place. The solid product may be ground and mixed with further fertilizing substances such as phosphates. The hair or wool may be mixed with an aqueous solution of the caustic reactant or alternatively the hair and caustic may be mixed dry and then moistened with water. In either case the process may be operated continuously in a reaction vessel provided with conveyer means. The alkalinity of the final product may be adjusted by adding an acidic substance during or after the processing of the product.
