Abstract
785,044. Electroplating-apparatus of the rotary barrel type. CRUICKSHANK, Ltd., R. Nov. 23, 1955 [Dec. 15, 1954], No. 36268/54. Class 41. An electroplating apparatus of the rotary-barrel type comprises a frame (a, b, Fig. 1) adapted to be supported on a tank c and movable vertically in and out of the tank, a pair of barrel-driving rings t adapted to be secured to the ends of the barrel u, rollers s on which the rings are suspended, driving mechanism for the rollers comprising a source of motion n mounted on the tank, gearing h, i, k, mounted on the frame and detachably engageable with the source of motion and steadying devices w carried by the frame engaging the ends of the barrel. To each end of the frame are attached two cylindrical pegs d which rest in two forked sockets e attached to the tank. A shaft f, mounted in bearings g on the frame carries a pinion h which engages another pinion i on a shaft also mounted on the frame. Shaft j carries a pinion k which, when the frame is located on the tank, engages a pinion m mounted on bracket r on the tank and driven by a motor n and reduction gearing q also mounted on bracket r. The frame may be raised or lowered by overhead lifting tackle. Straps v, Fig. 4, attached to the barrel-driving rings t are secured to the ends of the barrel by screws A, Fig. 1. The rollers may operate frictionally or be toothed. Cylindrical steady pieces w enter the ends of the barrel at their centres and are attached by their other rectangular ends to the frames which consist of a pair of parts guiding the steady piece. Insulated conductors x enter the barrel through holes in the steady pieces, their free ends lying , on the bottom of the barrel and their other ends being attached to terminals on the frame. The anodes may consist of a series of metal plates (flat or semi-cylindrical) suspended by metal hooks from anode rods. The shaft j may be extended and attached through sets of pinions i and h to two smaller shafts f which carry rollers as in Fig. 5.
