Abstract
895,793. Barrel-plating apparatus. UDYLITE RESEARCH CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 28140/60. Class 41. Barrel-plating apparatus, e.g. for use in electroplating, comprises treating cylinders 10 circumferentially arranged about a shaft 20 of a rotating frame and removably mounted by spring means 64 whereby the cylinders can be rotated with the shaft through baths of treatment liquid. Each cylinder has a removable end wall 28 and is removably mounted between support members 42 and 44 secured to the shaft 20. The support members carry sockets 54 and 60 into which the heads of screws 36 on the cylinders can be fitted, socket 60 being mounted on a U-shaped spring so that it is urged towards the support 42 and thereby clampingly retains the cylinder. The cylinder can be locked in clamped position by turning a knob 70 to block movement of a leg 68 of the spring to the left as seen in Fig. 2. Rotation of the cylinder about its own axis is prevented by a pin 78 or by suitably shaped mating parts of the screws 36 and their sockets 54 and 60. Current can be supplied via conductors 82 to electrodes 34 within the cylinder to electrify workpieces therein. The rotatable framework is carried by a frame 12 with a lifting eye 14 so that it can be raised and lowered into a series of treating tanks. A motor 16 on the frame rotates the cylinders through a gear 18. Fig. 2 shows a lug 56 and a screw 58 connecting the support 42 and gear 18. Tiers of cylinders may be arranged along the shaft 20 with the cylinders of adjacent tiers angularly offset. The cylinders may be of electrically non- conductive material or of steel with an electrically non-conductive coating. Fig. 2 shows all the metallic parts protected from corrosive attack by a coating 84.
