Abstract

1,220,289. Door operating mechanism. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. 4 Aug., 1969 [16 Aug., 1968], No. 39286/68. Heading E2M. [Also in Division F2] A storage vessel has a manway access door whose operating mechanism moves the door bodily inside the tank. To vent the tank pneumatic cylinder 10 is extended to rotate hinge arm 11 about pin 8 and thus, via pin 14 and column 13, lift door 1 bodily from seating 15. Door 1 moves to the inside of, and remains parallel to, tank wall 5. The tank is then vented through gap 21 and central circular aperture 22 in plate 19. The door may be cleaned by a suitable solution pumped through connector 29, spindle 23 and spray ball 25, and through connector 34 and adjustable annular nozzle 33. Plate 19 prevents splashing, and maintains door 1 parallel to wall 5. Four bolts 18 integral with plate 19, slide through one of four equi-spaced arms 17 which are integral with column 13. Springs 20 urge plate 19 against flange 2, the stroke of cylinder 10 being insufficient to lift plate 19 from flange 2. To give access to the tank, pin 36 is removed and hinge arm 11 is manually rotated about pin 8 so that the arms 17 lift plate 19 from flange 2, and door 1 and plate 19 are swung together into the tank. Micro-switches 35, which may be replaced by pneumatic controls, detect the position of the door to control the operation of the cleaning system. Cylinder 10 may be hydraulically operated, or may be replaced by an electrical mechanism.
