Abstract

870,928. Cleaning metals. DEHYDAG DEUTSCHE HYDRIERWERKE G.m.b.H. July 10, 1959 [July 12, 1958; Aug. 6, 1958], No. 23708/59. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XXXVI] Metal articles are cleaned in a twolayer bath, the lower layer comprising an organic solvent, the upper layer comprising an aqueous alkaline solution, and the articles being treated first in the organic layer and then in the aqueous layer. The exemplified organic solvent is perchlorethylene and specified compounds which may be used in the alkaline solution are alkaline metal hydroxides, soda, waterglass, phosphates and cyanides. One or both layers may also contain a surfaceactive agent of which many examples are given. The alkaline solution may also contain a dispersing agent, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose. Electric current may be applied to the alkaline solution to effect cathodic or anodic cleaning. Further, the layers may be heated and circulated and filtered. Articles to be cleaned may be composed of iron, steel, copper, brass, bronze or nickel. An apparatus suitable for cleaning discrete articles in which the articles are suspended in the bath is described in connection with Fig. 1 (not shown). Fig. 2 shows an apparatus suitable for cleaning elongated products such as wires and chains, in which the right-hand arm of tank 1 contains the alkaline solution and the material to be cleaned is conducted through the bath over rollers 4.
