The hoisting and traversing movements of an overhead travelling hoist on a vehicle are operated through cables from hydraulic rams 24, 25, 26, Fig. 2, mounted outside the loadreceiving floor 2, Fig. 1. Traversing is effected by cables 17, 18 which pass from the hoist carriage 11 over suitably disposed pulleys to tackle spread by the rams 25, 26 which are controlled by common valves in such a way as always to maintain the cables in tension and which are housed on a framework 3, Fig. 1, placed on the remote side of a fireproof screen 7, continuous with a canopy 6, from the body of the vehicle. The hoisting cable 16 is anchored at 20 to the runway 1 and is guided by pulleys 13 on the carriage 11 to pass under the load block 14 after which it is guided by suitably disposed pulleys 34, Fig. 2, 21, 22 to tackle carried by the cylinder and piston-rod of the ram 24. The rear end of the runway 1 is supported by an arched frame 4 beyond which it extends over a portion of the vehicle floor (not shown) which hinges downwardly so that the hoist carriage 11 may be positioned over a load on the ground. A pump for providing pressure liquid for the hydraulic rams may be driven from the engine of the vehicle and the controls for the rams may be positioned at the rear of the vehicle.
