Abstract

783,058. Centrifugal fans. HOOVER, Ltd. March 6, 1956 [March 18, 1955], No. 7063/56. Class 110(1). [Also in Group XXVIII] A canister type suction cleaner (see Group XXVIII) has a low-pressure fan 28, Fig. 2, and a high-pressure fan 29 mounted on a common motor-shaft 30, and a non-return valve 38 biased to its closed position and through which most of the low-pressure fan exhaust passes to atmosphere when the cleaner nozzle (not shown) is in contact with a coarsely tufted carpet resulting in high air flow and low suction. When the nozzle contacts a smooth surface resulting in low air flow and high suction the valve 38 closes, allowing the high pressure fan to provide a higher suction in the nozzle than is possible using the low-pressure fan alone. In a handlepropelled suction cleaner the low-pressure fan 41, Fig. 4, draws from the nozzle 45, and the exhaust after traversing a filter bag 46 passes either to atmosphere through a non-return valve 53 in the filter bag casing 47 or to the inlet of the high-pressure fan 40 according to whether the mouth of the nozzle is in contact with a rough or smooth surface.
