Abstract

762,910. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Aug. 11, 1954 [Aug. 18, 1953], No. 23316/54. Class 8(1) A suction cleaner comprises a casing 10 affording a suction chamber 30, and a motor driven fan chamber communicating directly with an intermediate chamber 47 formed between the fan unit support and a bulkhead 39. The chamber 30 is connected to a suction port for the attachment of a cleaning tool and to the chamber 47 through a flap valve 44 closed by a spring 45. An ejector comprising an atmospheric air inlet 67, an inlet 72 communicating with the chamber 30, a nozzle 69 and a discharge tube 58 is mounted in the chamber 30 and the tube 58 communicates with the chamber 47 so that if the suction porti s restricted, a larger volmue of atmospheric air is drawn in through the inlet 67, which creates a higher degree of suction in the chamber 30 than the fan is capable of producing and at the same time an adequate quantity of air is drawn over the fan unit to cool the motor. In a modification the atmospheric inlet 67 is normally closed by a valve which is subjected to the suction in the chamber 30 such that when the degree of suction increases to a predetermined amount the valve opens to bring the ejector into operation.. In a further modification :the ejector is mounted on the exterior of the casing 10 and comprises part of the handle structure.
