Abstract

707,348. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. May 20, 1952 [May 26, 1951], No. 12761/52. Class 8 (1). In a handle propelled motor fan suction cleaner wherein the motor and fan axes are vertical and spaced apart so as to lie in the fore and aft vertical plane of the cleaner, the motor is disposed between the nozzle 8, Fig. 1, and the fan 45. A rotary agitator 47 and the fan 45 are driven from motor shaft pulleys 49, 50 through belts 48, 51 and the fan eye 73 is connected to the nozzle 8 by ducts 12, Fig. 2, passing round opposite sides of the motor and terminating at the top of the ends of the nozzle 8. A hood 60 over a casting forming the nozzle and housing the motor and fan has a port 79 normally closed by a hinged cover 77 for a converter 84, Fig. 7. On raising the cover 77 flanges 81 thereof abut arms 105 projecting upwardly from a U-shaped wheel chassis 91, to depress the latter relatively to the cleaner body about a horizontal axis 92 and against a spring 95 to elevate the nozzle clear of the ground. Adjustment of the nozzle for carpets of differing thicknesses is effected by rocking a lever 103 secured to a shaft 100 having two flat surfaces 102 which when they abut the legs of the chassis 91 maintain the nozzle 8 in the normal position, whereas with the lever 103 in the vertical position and the round part of the shaft 100 abutting the legs, the nozzle assumes a high working position. A lamp 69 shines through an elongated vent 62 through which cooling air for the motor is drawn by a fan 29, discharging through a duct 37.
