Abstract

595,964. Suction cleaners. FILLERY, G. T. July 11, 1945, No. 17731. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXIII] A suction cleaner comprises a suction nozzle, a floor-polishing element and means for tilting the cleaner so as selectively to bring either the nozzle or the polisher into the on-the-floor position at will. The polisher comprising a pair of oppositely rotating brushes G, Fig. 3, resiliently mounted on a lateral plate G<2> and driven by a friction disc F carried by a motordriven fan spindle D<2> is arranged in tandem with the nozzle B'. The nozzle opening B<2> lies in a plane inclined at an angle P to that of the brushes, and is provided with a hinged telescopic mouth M to evacuate dust raised by the polisher. The cleaner is supported on a pilot roller K carried by a spring-loaded hinged strut K<1> and rollers H about which the cleaner is tilted by manual depression of spring K<4>. A nose K<6> wedges the periphery of the brushes and thus disengages them from the driving disc F. In a modification, brushes R<3>, Fig. 7, are rotated by spring-pressed ball-jointed stub axles N<1> of tapered clutch members R<2> which in turn are driven by a friction wheel R. A pair of pilot rollers T, Fig. 8, when operated by a toggle lever T<3> raise the brushes from the floor, and springs R<6> move the clutches R<2> out of engagement with the disc R,. The nozzle may be provided with an agitator.
