Abstract

156,736. Apex Electrical Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Orr, W. V.). Jan. 17, 1917, [Convention date]. Vacuum cleaning-apparatus.-The travelling casing of a vacuum cleaner having a downwardly facing collecting-nozzle and a motor-driven fan is supported upon a frame having at least three supporting wheels and an operating-handle, and is movable in relation to the frame so as to adjust the height of the nozzle-mouth above the floor. As shown, the casing is formed with a nozzle 5, Fig. 2, having a wide inlet and a plate 13 with a part 14 enclosing the brush 40 and a part 16 having teeth 17 for agitating the carpet. The teeth are inclined to the axis of the cleaner. The casing is pivotally mounted upon a frame consisting of side members 21, Fig. 4, which engage the sides 10 of the nozzle at their forward ends and are connected to a block 25 having a supporting roller 26 at their rear ends. The side members are pivotally connected to links 30 having pivots 31 upon which are mounted the links 32 which are pivoted to the casing and the arms 34 of the operating handle 35. The links 30, 32 form toggles which may be actuated by the handle to adjust the position of the nozzle-mouth in relation to the ground. The forward movement of the handle raises the nozzle-mouth, and the distance the mouth may be raised or lowered is limited by stops 33 secured upon the side members, and screws 36 carried by brackets 28 secured upon the frame respectively. The frame-brackets also carry shafts 28a upon which the supporting- wheels 29 are mounted. The brush is pivotally carried by links 46 which are pivoted to the wheelshafts and is actuated through belts 44 from the wheels.
