Abstract

528,913. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. May 8, 1939, No. 13659. Convention date, May 9, 1938. [Class 8 (i)] A propelled electric vacuum cleaner having main, rear and front wheels, the rear wheel pivots being normally fixed on the casing, is provided with auxiliary wheels movably mounted adjacent to the front wheels and resiliently urged downwards to take a part of the load. In one form of apparatus, the main and auxiliary front wheels are approximately coaxial, the main wheel pivots being fixed and the auxiliary wheel pivots carried by spring-pressed hinged brackets ; the ends of the handle bail may be connected directly to the auxiliary wheel pivots. In another form as shown, the auxiliary and main front wheels are both movable to different extents being carried, e.g. on common spring-pressed pivoted links P or being independently mounted under spring pressure their movements being correlated by interengaging cams. The tread of the main front wheels may be wider than that of either of the other sets of wheels. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a form in which the auxiliary wheels are carried on links pivoted on the fixed main wheel pivots. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
