Abstract

673,348. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Nov. 9, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 27436/50. Class 8 (i) A handle propelled motor fan suction cleaner having a converter 62 for off-the-floor cleaning arranged to be inserted between the fan eye 19 and a belt 21 connecting the fan shaft 17 with a rotary nozzle brush 22, is provided with a shield 75 which is movable so as to close a slot at the end of the converter 62, and to receive the shaft 17 when the converter is in position ; the shield also preventing insertion when the cleaner is in normal use whilst allowing ready access of dirt laden air to the fan eye 19. The shield 75 is L-shaped and is carried by the fan casing 15 which pivots with the handle 29 so that in the upright storage position of said handle the shield registers with the slot, but not otherwise. A spring-biased inwardly opening flap 51 normally closes the converter port, and the nozzle 10 is automatically raised clear of the floor surface on swinging the handle 29 to its upright storage position. This is effected by relative depression of the front wheels 35 on abutment of a projection 48 of an arcuate casing portion 47 against an off-set middle portion 42 of a shaft 39 having off-set ends 38 carrying the wheels 35.
