In a device for supplying machines producing filter-tip cigarettes in which coaxially disposed cigarettes with interposed filter plugs are joined by a sleeve which is afterwards cut at the centre of the filter plug, the cigarettes 2 are fed in two side-by-side rows on a take-off belt 1 of a rod machine to two side-by-side hoppers feeding the filter-tip machine, one of which, 4, is shown and is divided from the other by a wall 13, and each hopper has an overflow space 13a above it. The space 13a is divided from the hopper 4 by a plate 15 resting on a pin 17 and reciprocated longitudinally by linkage including a lostmotion connection from a cam gear associated with the receiving conveyer of the filter-tip machine (not shown). The lost-motion connection comprises a lever 24 pivoted to the plate at 26 and to a support at 25, a spring 28 biasing this lever to the left, and an adjustable pin 27 on a reciprocating link 23 driven by the cam gear. Between the end of the plate and the end of the take-up belt 1 is a roller 3 driven clockwise to deflect surplus cigarettes on the belt to the overflow space, and to assist cigarettes to pass from the overflow space into the hopper through the gap 30 which is opened and closed by reciprocation of the plate. Cigarettes are prevented from passing from the overflow space into the hopper, if the level of cigarettes in the hopper rises sufficiently to raise a feeler plate 31, and thereby through toggle links 33, 35 raise a spring-pressed latch and thereby through toggle links 33, 35 raise a spring-pressed latch 37 into the path of movement of the lever 24. The stop is arranged to arrest movement of lever 24 to the left, so that gap 30 remains closed until the feeler plate 31 is lowered. An agitator 16 pivoted on the pin 17 and rocked by the link 23 spreads the cigarettes evenly in the hopper, and a pair of driven eccentrics 10, 10a assist the passage of cigarettes from the hopper into a shoot (not shown) feeding the filter-tip machine.
