Abstract

782,573. High frequency discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 28, 1955 [July 21 1954], No. 21284/54. Class 39(1). An oscillator for generating very high frequencies utilizes the Cerenkov effect : an electron beam is projected through a passage in a dielectric guide D at a velocity greater than that of light in the dielectric. The dielectric guide is within a resonant cavity E from which the oscillations are extracted at G. The beam is initially accelerated between the gun A and end plate P 1 , accelerated between end plates P 1 , P 2 to compensate for loss in velocity, due to the radiation, and finally retarded between end plate P 2 and the target F, C is a magnetic focusing coil.
