Abstract
592,572. Electron oscillators. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Dec. 31, 1943, No. 21941. Convention date, .May 3, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] Apparatus for use as an amplifier comprises an electron gun G, a pair of electrostatic deflecting plates 17 to which the signal potentials from a line 28 are applied and between which the electron beam passes, a magnetic field produced by a magnet 22 at right angles to the direction of the electron beam and adapted to cause the beam to describe different arcuate paths according to the amount of deflection at the plates 17, and an output resonator 18 through which the beam passes to a collector electrode 21. It is stated that the uniform beam at the plates 17 is converted into a density modulated beam at the resonator. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 8 (not shown), the plates 17 may be at a constant potential difference and the beam is velocity modulated before passing between them. By providing feed-back between the output resonator and the deflecting plates, the device may be used as an oscillation generator. An arrangement of this kind is shown in Fig. 6, in which the resonator 18a has a gap 19 formed by two reentrant portions ; the gun G and deflecting plates 17 are formed by tongues struck out from apertures at one end of the gap, and the output apertures and collector electrode 21 are provided at the other end. In a push-pull arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown), a collector electrode is provided at each end of the gap, and two electron guns project beams of electrons in opposite directions between deflecting plates at a point midway of the gap.
