781,955. Tyre valves. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. June 16, 1955 [June 16, 1954; Aug. 10, 1954; Dec. 17, 1954], No. 17410/55. Class 135. A valve stem for tubeless tyres consists of a rigid, tubular insert 10 surrounded by and bonded to a tapered, elastic housing 11 having at its inner end an axial recess 18 of greaterdiameter than the insert and on its outer surface a peripheral bead 22 between which and a shoulder 23 the thickness of the wheel rim is accommodated. The shoulder 23 is in the form of an axially extending flange formed by the provision of an annular groove 21 and is pressed outwardly by contact with the rim when the valve stem is assembled therewith. The tubular insert 10 is threaded internally to receive a standard valve core. The insert terminates short of the larger end of the housing and is rounded at its end 16 so as to permit the material of the housing to be compressed radially inwardly when the stem is assembled with the rim of the wheel To facilitate assembly of the stem with the rim the stem may be stretched axially to reduce the diameter of the part surrounding the inner end of the insert.
