Abstract
836,286. Aircraft wheels. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 4,1958 [Feb. 18, 1957], No. 3648/58. Classes 144 (1) and 144 (2). In an aircraft wheel comprising two wheel halves 12, 14 and for use with a tubeless tyre, the inflating valve 62 comprises a stem 64 which houses a valve core 74, extends through a transverse hole 46 in one wheel halt (14) below its rim portion 30, and has a radial flange or boss 76 air-tightly housed in an aligned transverse chamber 44 in the other wheel half 12 to abut the radial " split " face 48 of the wheel half 14 surrounding the hole 46, the stem 64 being secured against rocking and axially inward displacement by a locking member 84 which engages in a iadial bore 42 in the rim 18 of wheel half 12 communicating with the chamber 44 and which is detachably screwed to a longitudinal extension 82 of the boss 76, and said locking member being shaped to permit passage of air through the bore 42 from the chamber 44. As shown, the stem boss 76 has a peripheral groove 78 housing a seal 80, and the two wheel halves have an interfitting rim groove 54 and extension 56 respectively between which is sandwiched a seal 58. The locking member 84 snugly engages the wall of the bore 42 but has flats 86 on its periphery to provide the necessary air passage. When required for use with a tubed tyre, the valve assembly can be removed and the openings 42, 44, 46, Fig. 3; provide a housing for the tube valve.
