Abstract

780,390. Centrifugal pumps. DOWLING, D. R. July 8, 1955 No. 19907/55. Class 110 (1). In a centrifugal pump of the type having a casing consisting of a body and a cover-plate with an interposed gasket, and an outlet leading substantially tangentially from the volute, a substantially cylindrical outer part of the outlet is formed in the body, and the inner part of the outlet consists of a recess or channel in the body communicating with the outer part and closed by a portion of the cover-plate. The pump casing 10, Fig. 6, comprises a cylindrical outlet boss 17 which is internally threaded to receive an outlet pipe and is preceded by a plain cylindrical bore. A channel 20 extending between the cylindrical bore and the volute chamber 11 is of substantially rectangular section adjacent the cut-off 21, developing to a section having parallel sides and a semi-circular bottom, as shown in Fig. 3, adjacent its junction with the cylindrical bore. The cover-plate 23, Fig. 4, comprises a projection 31 which fits closely into the chamber 11 and has an extension 32 which is shaped as shown in Fig. 5 so that when it is interfitted with the channel 20 as shown in Fig. 3 there is formed a bore which is initially of rectangular section and develops to a circular section of the same diameter as, and registering with, the aforementioned cylindrical bore. A gasket 22 is interposed between the casing and the cover-plate. The casing, coverplate and impeller 33 are of die-cast metal or moulded thermosetting plastics material.
